iTunes and Spotify Announce They Will Be Removing All Insane Clown Posse Music From Their Library

Today it was announced that both iTunes and Spotify will be pulling all Insane Clown Posse songs from their digital media libraries. Fans of the Insane Clown Posse can expect to see all traces of the hip hop duo removed from iTunes and Spotify by mid-January 2015. The details behind the decision were relatively unclear; however a spokesperson from each entity has confirmed that they have been receiving large amounts of pressure from advertisers and sponsors to remove Insane Clown Posse music from their library.
iTunes spokesperson Gerald Hutchinson told reporters, “The decision to remove them (Insane Clown Posse) from our digital library was not an easy one, however at the end of the day we are a business and have to make decisions that are conducive to our earnings and growth.” According to Hutchinson, iTunes has received an abundance of threats to terminate or decline renewal of advertising contracts from several advertisers and sponsors.

Hutchinson declined to comment as to which sponsors and advertisers were threatening to terminate their affiliation with iTunes, however he did make the following statement, “The requests to eliminate Insane Clown Posse’s music from our library have been growing in size each month, it was clear that the issue was not going to disappear.” According to Hutchinson iTunes began to receive threats from the unnamed advertisers and sponsors in July 2014 after a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit requiring the FBI to discontinue the classification of Insane Clown Posse’s fan base as a gang.
It is clear to experts and speculators alike that advertisers were not comfortable with having affiliation with a company that provides its customers with music that speaks to gang members and criminal activity. Devin Larson, a social commentator for the Toolson Herald told fans of the publication, “It’s certainly an interesting scenario, on one hand Insane Clown Posse and their fans are protected by the freedom of speech, on the other hand iTunes and Spotify are entitled to make decisions that best serve their business and profits, advertisers and sponsors are a huge part of those profits.”
Spotify spokesperson Kimberly Terrence told reporters, “As a company that does not charge our customers to access music, advertisers are crucial to our business model. As much as it pains us to upset any demographic of our current customers, we simply could not survive without the support of our advertisers and sponsors. “
Though Insane Clown Posse founders Violent J (Joseph Bruce ) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) have not yet publically addressed the decision made by iTunes and Spotify, their seemingly loyal fans, referred to as Juggalos, have been very outspoken regarding their dissatisfaction with the decision. One Insane Clown Posse fan who refers to himself has Loco Chain made the following statement via twitter, “No more iTunes or Spotify, only Pandora 4 me…Why are they not removing GANGSTER rap like Easy E?”

Striving for more, TT moved to Las Vegas to create a better life for him and his son, Terry.

Most recently, TT worked at the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino where he shared his wonderful personality with everyone he met.

TT made so many friends in Las Vegas, even more in Detroit, and countless others around the country.

Unfortunately for us, God has called him home.

Now is the time to show our gratitude for the joy he brought into our lives.

So many of you have asked where to send cards or flowers.  Instead, please send a memorial donation to his only son Terry.

New Tupac Album

Join the offical land of the banned Messageboard

Following the bankruptcy of Death Row Records’ Suge Knight, the famed label hit the auction block Wednesday. Ultimately, Nashville-based Global Music Group won the rights to Death Row’s catalogue for $24 million and taking ownership of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle and, perhaps most lucratively, twenty unreleased tracks by Tupac Shakur. Odds are that a new, posthumous Tupac album could hit shelves by the end of the year, though one obstacle is that new Tupac releases must be approved by Evergreen Copyrights and Shakur’s heir. Evergreen and Warner Music Group were both in the running to buy Death Row, but the label’s deep pool of unpaid debts scared away both companies from offering more money. Suge Knight was forced to sell off Death Row Records after falling into bankruptcy following a $107 million judgment leveled against Knight by a former partner.

Lil Wayne Vs Al Sharpton

Join the offical land of the banned Messageboard

On Lil Wayne’s final song on Tha Carter III, Weezy F Baby takes a moment to direct a diss towards Rev Al Sharpton. On the Nina Simone sampled “DontGetIt,” Wayne explains why he doesn’t respect Sharpton with some poignant conversation.

“You’re the type that gets off on gettin’ on other people,” Wayne says as he talks through the end of the song. “I much rather you talk to me first and see if you can learn an opinion before you make one. Mr. Sharpton, and anyone like you, you don’t know me.”

It appears that Wayne is bothered by Sharpton’s crusade against the “N” and “B” words used in rap music. Sharpton has led the charge in trying to force rappers to stop using the words in their music.

“You see you are no MLK, you are no Jesse Jackson. You a nobody, to me, you’re just another Don King with a perm, just a little more political,” he continues. “And that just means you’re a little unhuman than us humans. And now, let me be human by sayin’ fu*k Al Sharpton!”

Now the Reverend has decided to respond to the verbal attacks as he dismisses Lil Wayne’s credibility. The following statement was provided by Sharpton for television’s first music blog The Daily Fix.

“While some of the rappers don’t like the fact that Reverend Sharpton has been leading marches against the use of the N, B, H words and NAN’s stance against the degradation of women in music, a Gallup poll released last week revealed that Reverend Sharpton has a 50% approval rate among African Americans. So why dignify a response to one rap artist who doesn’t even say anything substantive.”

Will this start a war of words between the two?

Nas’s NiGGER Mixtape Hitting The Streets

Join the offical land of the banned Messageboard

could this be the cover?

New York rapper Nas is still determined for his controversial entitled album to hit the streets–one way or another. According to Dj Green Lantern, the Queens bred MC will be releasing a mixtape bearing the scrapped album title.

“The NIGGer Tape” is said to feature exclusive tracks, remixes and outtakes, including an unreleased verse from Nas’s recently released “Be A NIGGER Too,” Black President,” a cut initially slated to appear on Green’s Barak Obama mixtape and “Legendary,” the theme song to a forthcoming Mike Tyson documentary.

A new version of “The Last Real Nigga Alive,” which originally appeared on God’s Son, is also expected to make the final cut.

“I guess it shows you the power of Wal-Mart and Target,” Green tells Rhapsody.com regarding Nas’ title switch. “If that was the case, it’s definitely scary because it kind of fu*ks with your artistic vision. But Nas and DJ Green Lantern are coming out with a mixtape called The NIGGER Tape. Can’t nobody hold that back.”

No word as to when the tape will be released.

Court Ruling Could End P2P Music-Download Lawsuits

Join the Message Board

A federal court has dealt a body blow to the recording industry’s efforts to sue people who use peer-to-peer software to download music from the Internet. In fact, says one copyright lawyer, the P2P decision could mean the end of the Recording Industry Association of America’s litigation strategy.

In Atlantic Records v. Howell, U.S. District Court Judge Neil V. Wake rejected the RIAA’s theory that the defendants distributed music files merely by making them publicly available through the Kazaa P2P application. Contrary to the music industry’s theory, “Merely making an unauthorized copy of a copyrighted work available to the public does not violate a copyright holder’s exclusive right of distribution,” the judge wrote.

The facts of the case are fairly typical. MediaSentry, the private investigator that researches these matters for the RIAA, used Kazaa to identify 4,000 files available from the Howells’ computer, with 54 of them copyrighted music files. MediaSentry took screenshots showing the files available and downloaded 12 of the songs.

‘Gold Standard’

The defendants, Jeffrey and Pamela Howell, say they made legitimate copies of their CDs for personal use and they didn’t know Kazaa was making them public. Asked in a deposition if he was sharing music files online, Jeffrey Howell said, “I was not, no. The computer was, but I was not. The computer in some form … made files that I did not know available on the Internet.”

“This case harmonizes everything. It sets the gold standard,” said Ray Beckerman, a copyright attorney with the New York firm of Vandenberg & Feliu and author of the Recording Industry v. The People blog, in a telephone interview. “Other district courts will follow it. Appeals courts will follow it.”

In the Howell case, the recording industry now has to “show he actually disseminated to members of the public — and that he did it, not someone else,” Beckerman said.

A Fatal Blow?

The decision will be devastating to the recording industry’s litigation strategy, Beckerman said. “In cases where the person admittedly or clearly made unauthorized copies, those people will be held to have violated the reproduction right” — the copyright holder’s exclusive right to reproduce content — Beckerman said. But the industry will lose when it comes to the right of distribution, he added. “I believe they won’t be able to prove actual dissemination.”

The litigation strategy has made sense because of the statutory damages the Copyright Act allows for copyright infringement — starting at $750 per song for unintentional infringement and as high as $150,000 per song for willful infringement. That was the basis of the verdict against Jammie Thomas, who was ordered to pay $9,250 per song for total damages of $222,000 — based on the “making available” theory.

While Thomas has moved to set that verdict aside, the Howell decision strongly boosts her argument that the verdict was based on an erroneous jury instruction, Beckerman said. If the case eventually gets to appeal, “any appellate brief would come in firing on the Howell case,” Beckerman said. “If I were writing the brief, I now have four cases holding the jury instruction was improper, and this is the strongest one yet.”

Damages of $750 per song will also be held unconstitutional, Beckerman predicted, since the actual lost profit when a song is copied is about 40 cents. In cases where restaurants and bars have played music without paying royalties, damages have been limited to no more than four times actual damages, Beckerman said. At those rates litigation becomes impossible to justify.

“I’m pretty sure these P2P cases will be struck down,” Beckerman said, “but I expect this to go away before it’s all resolved.” Shareholders will put a stop to the lawsuits before the courts do, he added.

Keys talks about her conspiracy theories

Join the Message Board

NEW YORK — There’s another side to Alicia Keys: conspiracy theorist. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter tells Blender magazine: “`Gangsta rap’ was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. `Gangsta rap’ didn’t exist.”

Keys, 27, said she’s read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck “to symbolize strength, power and killing ’em dead,” according to an interview in the magazine’s May issue, on newsstands Tuesday.

Another of her theories: That the bicoastal feud between slain rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. was fueled “by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing.”

Keys’ AK-47 jewelry came as a surprise to her mother, who is quoted as telling Blender: “She wears what? That doesn’t sound like Alicia.” Keys’ publicist, Theola Borden, said Keys was on vacation and unavailable for comment.

Though she’s known for her romantic tunes, she told Blender that she wants to write more political songs. If black leaders such as the late Black Panther Huey Newton “had the outlets our musicians have today, it’d be global. I have to figure out a way to do it myself,” she said.

The multiplatinum songstress behind the hits “Fallin'” and “No One” most recently had success with her latest CD, “As I Am,” which sold millions.

The Night James Brown Saved Boston

April 5, 1968 — the morning after one of the most catastrophic moments in American history: the assassination of Martin Luther King. The night before, America’s inner cities began going up in flames. The night before, there was trouble in Roxbury, Boston’s ghetto. Word on the street is that it’s about to get worse. A lot worse.

At Boston’s City Hall, Mayor Kevin White is trying to figure out what he can do to keep the fragile peace. Reportedly, he’s about to cancel that day’s biggest gathering — a long-scheduled James Brown concert at the Boston Garden. Then, a call from one of Boston’s most influential R&B DJs to the lone black city councilman points out the danger of that decision. Simply, he says, if the concert is cancelled, Boston might have the biggest uprising since the Boston Tea Party. And so, faced with the grim reality of making the wrong decision, the mayor and his team turn it around. Rather than cancel the show, they ask “Is there something James Brown can do to help?”

Up until this moment, James Brown has been an unsung civil rights hero. Being black in the music business, especially in the mid-1950s when James first hit his stride, made him a pioneering artist in a still-segregated business. “Crossing-over” wasn’t easy, and he knew all too well what it meant to be “colored.”. But James Brown doesn’t just “feel the pain” of being black in America. Despite all of his success, he’s still living it. And in songs like 1967’s “Don’t Be A Dropout,” he’s begun to speak out, saying what he believes down to his bones is true. In 1968, he will sing about America as his home, and he’s also on the verge of his seminal social statement, “Say It Loud-I’m black and I’m proud.”

But on April 5, 1968, James Brown the patriot is also James Brown the businessman, so he definitely isn’t in the mood to hear what Boston Mayor Kevin White is asking. Mayor White wants to know if JB will encourage his fans to stay home and watch the concert on television. In so many words, the mayor is saying, “If you’ll allow this concert to be on TV tonight, your fans in Boston (code for ghetto class African-Americans) will stay home and the night will be peaceful.” Meaning that unlike what might is happening in so many other cities around the country, Boston won’t erupt in flames. There won’t be rioting. If James will give his blessing. And he does.

Finally, 40 years after that remarkable and historic moment, VH1 Rock Docs presents “The Night James Brown Saved Boston”, a film from David Leaf Productions. It tells the story of that amazing night — with rarely seen footage of the concert (until now, that concert has been buried in the archives). Through those amazing concert moments…and with the personal reminiscences of James Brown’s band members, colleagues (including his long-time manager Charles Bobbit), awe-struck concert-goers (including Newsweek’s David Gates), the Boston city government officials and the pointed commentary of several distinguished observers of African-American history (Dr. Cornel West, Dr. Andrew Young, Rev. Al Sharpton) — the dramatic and emotionally-riveting story unfolds.

Even in this bleakest of moments, James knows his job is to go on-stage and give the
people a reason not to riot. He puts on a mesmerizing show. James Brown kept the peace in one of America’s most racially inflammatory cities. And he did that just by being James Brown — setting the stage of the Boston Garden on fire. And the city itself didn’t burn. Boston remained peaceful and the night became legendary. And the story of that night is at the heart of the film, “The Night James Brown Saved Boston.”

(“The Night James Brown Saved Boston” is directed by David Leaf, whose most recent feature documentaries include the Grammy-nominated “Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson & The Story of SMiLE” and the VH1 Rock Doc, “The U.S. Vs. John Lennon.”)

England Hates Snoop Dogg

Join the Forums

The British government has challenged a recent ruling that could allow rapper Snoop Dogg back into the country. Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Broadus, was banned from the United Kingdom in March of 2007, after he and his entourage were involved in a brawl with security officers at London’s Heathrow Airport.

In May of 2006, the rapper received a caution for the fracas in Heathrow, which involved more than 30 people and left seven police officers with minor injuries, including one who broke his hand.

After several unsuccessful attempts to gain reentry into the country, an asylum immigration tribunal approved the rapper’s appeal in January.

The U.K.’s Border Agency will challenge the ruling next week, according to a spokesman.

“We were disappointed with the judge’s decision in this case and have challenged his decision. This hearing is due to take place on the 7th of April. It would not be appropriate to comment further while these proceedings are ongoing,” the spokesman said.

During a recent article with The Guardian, Snoop Dogg downplayed his bad boy past.

“People in London always get information on me as far as when I go to jail and my criminal record,“ the rapper complained. “They never hear about my football team, my wife, my kids, my standing in the community, the gang interventions that I do. They don’t give a fu*k about it!”

’80s boy band New Kids on the Block to reunite

They may be pushing 40, but the New Kids are returning to the block.

The boy band New Kids on the Block, which sold 70 million albums in the 1980s and early ’90s, has reunited and plans to release a new album and go on tour. The reunion comes 20 years after the release of the group’s multiplatinum album, “Hanging Tough.”

“The fan response to this has been incredible,” band member Donnie Wahlberg told the Boston Herald.

Wahlberg said he was persuaded to get back together with his former bandmates — Joey McIntyre, brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood — when they decided to record new music. Wahlberg said he wrote 80 percent of the new material with McIntyre and Jordan Knight.

“I had no interest going out on a nostalgia tour and singing the same material,” said Wahlberg, 38.

But he added: “We absolutely will do the old songs for sure.”

Producer Maurice Starr formed the group in Boston in the 1980s, hoping to recreate the success he had with another teen group from Boston, New Edition.

At the height of their popularity, New Kids sold out world tours, marketed millions of dollars in merchandise and spawned a Saturday morning cartoon.

The group disbanded in 1994. Wahlberg has acted on television and in movies, while Jordan Knight, McIntyre and Wood released solo albums. Jonathan Knight became a real estate developer.

Mariah Tops Elvis, Makes Billboard History

Songstress Mariah Carey has made Billboard chart history by smashing Elvis Presley’s record for No. 1 hit songs.

Mariah moved past Elvis, claiming second place for the most No. 1 songs in the rock era. The diva’s latest single, “Touch My Body” jumped from No. 15 to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming Mariah’s 18th No. 1 song.

Her album E=MC2 hasn’t even hit shelves yet, but when it does, Mariah might just tie the Beatles’ record of 20 No. 1s before the new set drops.

The hit record “Touch My Body” also had a record-setting debut week, with a digital tally of 286,000 downloads. The song scored No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs and even outshone labelmate Rihanna’s summer banger “Umbrella,” which counted a whopping 277,000 downloads.

Presley also lost his standing as the artist with the most top 10s in the rock era, as Madonna took that title with her 37th top 10, “4 Minutes,” featuring Justin Timberlake.

But the news isn’t just history for the Mariah and Madonna. It’s a milestone for the charts, too. This is the first time since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2003 that two titles debuted simultaneously on Hot Digital Songs, each with more than 200,000 downloads. It also marks the best single-week digital tally in either artist’s career.

E=MC2 hits stores April 15.
